Mission

Together we enlist and support Vermont landowners in a long-term commitment to maintain and enhance diverse wildlife habitat and healthy ecosystems.

Vermont Coverts works to educate landowners and others about sound forest management and wildlife stewardship. Landowners have varied goals and reasons for owning their woods. We offer the resources and knowledge – through a network of professionals and trained Cooperators – to guide landowners to improve forest health and meet their goals.

Since 1985, Vermont Coverts has pursued its mission by:
  • educating landowners at a 3-day Cooperator Training, offering both classroom and field studies with forestry and wildlife professionals.
  • offering shorter forest stewardship workshops on topics in forest management, wildlife and land conservation. These occur both in-person and online.
  • providing opportunities to connect and learn with people of varied backgrounds and experiences that share a passion for wildlife.
  • communicating through its newsletter, Woodlands for Wildlife.
  • updating this website and social media, including Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.
  • maintaining personal contacts and collaborating with landowners, public agencies and private organizations in the conservation arena.

Coverts is an English word dating to the 14th century, pronounced "cuh-verts" (not "coe-verts"). It refers to dense thickets that provide shelter for wildlife.
